Bedtime Stories for Yuri

Ongoing series, 2023–present
Reclaimed textile industry fabric samples using handstitched applique, dimensions variable

Born to an American mother and a Palestinian-Lebanese father, I often reflect on my Arab-American upbringing in post-9/11 suburban Kansas. "Bedtime Stories," directly references this, depicting familial anecdotes in hand-stitched tapestries made from textile industry waste. These abstract expressionistic works are largely inspired by Arabic calligraphy and my recent reintroduction to my father's native language. Each piece is created with my children in mind, visual allegories urging them to embrace their cultural heritage in a way that I felt unable to do at their age.
